CHRISTUS Health System Offers TAVR Procedure

A longtime resident of the Dallas area, Paul Generale earned an MBA with an emphasis in healthcare administration from the University of Houston. Shortly after, he began his career at CHRISTUS St. John Hospital as chief operating and financial officer. Currently, Paul Generale serves as executive vice president and chief strategy and network officer of the Catholic health system CHRISTUS Health.

One of the top 50 heart hospitals in the US, CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System announced that its team of health practitioners had integrated transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures into the existing spectrum of heart procedures offered. TAVR is not a major surgery but rather a minimally invasive alternative for people with aortic valve stenosis who are not optimal candidates for aortic replacement surgery. TAVR circumvents the potential complications of open surgery on such patients.

Aortic valve stenosis occurs when the aortic valve (a structure that enables the flow of blood from the lower chambers of the heart to major blood vessels) fails to open properly. This reduces the normal flow of blood from the heart to the major vessels. Symptoms of aortic valve stenosis include chest pain, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, lack of appetite (especially in children), and general weakness. TAVR procedures remedy the collapsed valve by replacing the damaged valve with another valve in a minimally invasive procedure. The approach involves creating an incision in the arm or leg and directing the valve placement through a catheter inserted into a blood vessel at the incision site. The procedure typically takes less than two hours.

Though she left the hospital requiring supplementary oxygen, Aubrei has since been weaned off it, allowing her to enjoy a more normal life. Reasons Nurses Make Great CEOs

Through his work as an executive vice president with Christus Health, Paul Generale oversees the not-for-profit organization’s strategy across various systems. This role allows Paul Generale to have direct experience with the professionals required to develop an excellent healthcare system, including many nurses. The many skills nurses develop over their careers make them ideal for C-suite positions in many organizations.

There are several reasons nurses are valuable at the executive level. Having worked directly with patients, nurses can bring a level of experience and knowledge many other hospital board members don’t have. Furthermore, these experiences translate into leadership skills because nurses play crucial roles in guiding patients through their treatments.

Nurses also work with all levels of staff at healthcare facilities. This work gives them a better understanding of the needs, pains, and frustrations each staff level has. Again, this is an invaluable insight that can help healthcare organizations develop processes to ensure teams are happier and more fulfilled in their roles. This combination of experiences, coupled with a nurse’s natural leadership qualities, make them ideal candidates for executive roles.

Another trend that emerged out of the pandemic is alternative packaging. Since glass bottles and closures had become more expensive, wine producers saw opportunities in cans.

This is because cans are considered more environmentally friendly and easier to carry to parties and drink from. Countries that heavily adopted this packaging alternative count the United States and Brazil. Another trend in 2022 wine production is earth-friendly wine, as consumers have become increasingly interested in sustainability.

An Irving, Texas resident, Paul Generale graduated from the University of Houston with an MBA. Paul Generale serves as the executive vice president of CHRISTUS Health in Dallas.

In 2017, CHRISTUS Health completed a partnership with LHC Group to expand the healthcare services outside the hospitals. CHRISTUS Health consists of over 60 hospitals throughout the U.S., and LHC Group is a national in-home healthcare provider that managed to assist many hospitals in need.

With the help of LHC Group, the healthcare services were streamlined, and more people benefited from treatments and consultations. The partnership served well even in the pandemic when almost all hospitals were full of patients and worked at a 98 percent capacity and couldn’t check in more people.
